In the protocol concert of the festival, Turkish Air Forces Dance and Jazz Orchestra makes the opening. This year İlham Gencer, one of the music veterans in Turkey who had brought jazz music to Turkey, companies the orchestra as soloist. Our very constant orchestra of Ankara and the legendary musician İlham Gencer will relish you with their beautiful melodies.
HISTORY OF TURKISH AIR FORCES AND JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Turkish Air Forces Jazz and Dance Orchestra was founded in 1961. Along it's history, with the many festivals, concerts, radio-TV shows the orchestra had attended in and out of Turkey, they were appreciated by the critics. Lieutenant colonel Stanley, the trumpet player of the Glenn Miller orchestra, liked the Air Forces Dance and Jazz Orchestra which he listened to at the American Embassy in 1962 in Ankara very much, and brought the Orchestra a repertoire made of timeless pieces which kept its currency at all times. The Air Forces Dance and Jazz Orchestra was chosen to be "the artist of the year" in 1969, 1970 and 1974. Turkish Air Forces Jazz and Dance Orchestra had represented Turkish Air Forces successfully in various Turkish cities. The name of our orchestra which performed a very successful concert in the opening concert of Ankara Jazz Festival 2005 had been changed as "Cazın Kartalları".
İLHAM GENCER BIOGRAPHY
"Legend alive" İlham Gencer will accompany Turkish Air Forces JAzz Orchestra on the opening night of the festival. He was born in İstanbul in 1925. He started dealing with music when he was little at the public houses in İstanbul. He met piano at the age of 5. He started playing with conductor Gregor with a jazz band of 8 instruments as the first jazz band of Turkey in 1944. He also played with İstanbul Military School Orchestra in 1947 as a high school student. He married Ayten Alpman in 1953. After 1960, he poened a jazz club called "Çatı" which had been frequented by t he famous people of İstanbul nightlife. He launched famous musicians in his club. He played at İstanbul State Radio with Turkish and foreign musicians for years. He presided the "Turkey Musicians' Syndicate" which he had founded. He got married for the second time in 1964 and Bora Gencer who is also a singer himself. His song "İstanbul" was awarded in"topkapı Music Contest" in 1965. He was awarded a lot of times and attended to many music events. He founded an association for protecting İstanbul and had presided it for many years. He made his jubilee of 50 musical years in 1997.
