Richard Baratta will be on our Youtube channel in the scope of 24th International Ankara Jazz Festival…
In addition to his interest in the film, Baratta, a jazz artist, plays the music he uses in his films with a group of precious musicians. Richard Baratta also gives lectures on Filmmaking and Using Music in Films at universities. The project, which reinforces both with the identity of the artist and the producer, meets art lovers as a conversation about Film and Music and then a concert. We appreciate United States Embassy for their precious support. Funding provided by the United States Government.
Richard Baratta, began his musical journey at the age 12, playing sax, flute and drums, and eventually, exclusively drums, playing mostly jazz all through his teens. From 1975 thru the mid 80’s he played with Hal Galper, Johnny Hartman, John Stubblefield, Mike Richmond, Kyo Kawasaki, Stu Goldberg, The Saheb Sarbib Multinational Big Band, Jack Wilkins, Guiierme Franco, Peter LaBarbara, the Marvelettes, Jessica Hagedorn and the Gangster Choir with Vernon Reid, the late, great violinist, Billy Bang, and others. In 1984, Baratta decided to alter paths and pursued a movie career. Since 1984, Baratta has worked on over 50 movies, first as a Location Manager, then Unit Production Manager, and for the past 15 years as a Co-Producer and Executive Producer. Some of his recent films have been JOKER, Martin Scorsese’s IRISHMAN, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, TAKING OF PELHAM 123, 5 SPIDERMAN movies, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, MAID IN MANHATTAN, AWAKENINGS, BIG and many, many more. In 2017 he decided to return to his roots and main love and began performing music again, as well as producing films. In the past 3 years he has played with Eric Alexander, Vincent Herring, Walter Blanding, Marcus Printup, Gerald Cannon, Calvin Hill, Essiet Essiet, Bill O’Connell, Emmett Cohen, Mike LeDonne, Jerry Weldon, Rogerrio Bocatto, Dave Kikoski, Mike Goetz, Paul Bollenback, Dave Stryker, Pat Bianchi and many notable others. In 2019 Baratta released his new CD, COMEBACK, a live recording of Latin/Jazz music, recorded at The Astor Room in NYC. His second CD, THE REEL DEAL, MUSIC IN FILM, on High Note Records, with side men, Bill O’Connell, Vincent Herring, Paul Bollenback, Michael Goetz, Paul Rossman and Carroll Scott, explores new takes on musical compositions from Film and TV. This recording is set for release in September, 2020. Besides his regular gigging in and around NYC, he plan’s on doing some touring later in the year to promote the latest CD. Baratta, besides being an accomplished drummer and musician, is also a lecturer and teacher, combining the relationship of Film in Music.
A veteran jazz pianist from New York City, Bill O'Connell is gifted soloist and bandleader known for his long-running Latin jazz big band. Born in New York City on August 22, 1953, O'Connell grew up in suburban Port Washington, Long Island. He studied classical piano at Oberlin College in Ohio. O'Connell has worked as a sideman with such luminaries as tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins and the late trumpeter Chet Baker. However, he does have his share of Latin credentials; New York trumpeter Jerry Gonzalez's Fort Apache Band and has crossed paths with flutist Dave Valentin, Argentinean tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri, Jon Lucien, and the late Cuban percussion master Mongo Santamaria. As a leader, O'Connell debuted in 1978 with an LP titled Searching, for the small Inner City label He then joined longtime associate flutist Dave Valentin's band, touring and recording for several years. O'Connell also continued working with Valentin, and played on albums by Charles Fambrough, Jon Lucien, and others. He currently teaches at Rutgers University and is busy playing, recording, and touring. He has appeared on many recordings, too numerous to name, and has over 20 recordings in his own name.
Saxophonist Vincent Herring's intense, soulful, multi-noted style and ebullient swing have excited audiences worldwide. On stage, Herring and his band often make an incendiary sound over fine and controlled rhythms of modern times. Vincent started playing saxophone at the age of 11 in school bands and studying privately at Dean Frederick’s School of Music in Vallejo, CA. At the age of 16, Herring was studying at California State University at Chico on a music scholarship. A year later he had won a berth in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. Vincent moved to New York City in early 1980's attending Long Island University. He first toured in the United States and Europe as part of the Lionel Hampton Big Band. With his sound strongly influenced by Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Vincent’s virtuosity and promise came to the attention of Nat Adderley. The two forged a nine-year musical relationship, producing nine albums and touring around the world year after year. Vincent worked and recorded with Cedar Walton for more than 20 years. He has also appeared on stage and or recordings with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition, Larry Coryell, Steve Turre, The Mingus Big Band (Won a Grammy in 2010), Kenny Barron, Nancy Wilson, Dr. Billy Taylor, Carla Bley, Mike LeDonne, Carl Allen, Ron McClure, and John Hicks among others. His extensive guest soloist appearances include performances with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center and Jon Faddis and The Carnegie Hall Big Band. Vincent's discography reveals over 20 titles as a leader and over 250 as a sideman. His current and past projects speak to the wi
