Turkish Air Forces Jazz and Dance Orchestra was founded in 1961. Through its long history it performed at many festivals, concerts, radio-TV shows in and out of Turkey receiving much acclaim from critics. Lieutenant colonel Stanley, the trumpet player of the Glenn Miller orchestra, admired the Air Forces Dance and Jazz Orchestra so much so that he in 1962 brought the Orchestra a repertoire made of timeless pieces to be listened to at all times. The Air Forces Dance and Jazz Orchestra was awarded 'the orchestra of the year' in 1969, 1970 and in 1974. Turkish Air Forces Jazz and Dance Orchestra representing the Turkish Air Forces have since been performing concerts successfully in various Turkish cities. The name of the orchestra which also gave concerts at The Ankara, Izmir and in Zonguldak jazz festivals, have changed its name ,with the directive of the Air Force Commander Faruk Comert, as 'Cazın Kartalları' (Eagles of Jazz)'.
Durul Gence is one of the best drummers and conductors of pop and jazz music in Turkey. In 1970 he achieved his first major success with an arrangement, which he made by drawing inspiration from a dance dedicated to a Caucasian legend Şeyh Şamil. Herbie Mann, Herb Geller, Sonny Sharock, Bertice Reading (USA), Four Pennies (UK), Lili Ivanova (Bulgaria), Mads Vinding, Peter Bastian, Anders Koppel (Danimark) are among the famous musicians that he played with. The concerts that he gave in Turkey and abroad are considered as successful works that prove Turkish musicans' modernness.
Due to his contributions to jazz education, at the reccomendation of Arif Mardin, he was awarded with a scholarship from Boston Berklee School of Music. Durul Gence continues his 'Humans, Music and Jazz' lectures at the Middle East Technical University (METU) and Hacettepe University. He also gives concerts with his group DG-4.
We would like to thank TURKISH AIR FORCE and HAVELSAN for supporting this concert.
